The outbreak of the Liberia Civil Crisis in 1990, give rise to the large number of Liberian refugees in neighboring country and part of the world. It is likely believed that over thousands of Liberians had sough refuge in neighboring countries, Europe and other economic countries. Many Liberians left the country due to the war in 1990, while others left as a result of instability in the country. The plight of Liberian residing in neighboring countries as refugees is a major concern to the international community.
Liberian refugees in Europe and other part of the world as reported in this article, could not have come at a worst time for them. Their current campaign to be recognized as refugees coming from country at war is being, undertaking during a serious debate surrounding asylum seekers in Europe. Liberian refugees constitute a fraction of the 899, 686 African refugees seeking asylum in the European Union countries.
However, Liberian refugees in Europe come under tighter state control because of the color of their skin. The bulks of the refugees are in Africa, where there is huge pressure on cash-strapped economies to absorb them. So why are the more economically powerful countries of the industrialized countries balking at the sight of their statues? "If industrialized states are unable to implement generous asylum policies for the relatively small number of refugees knocking at their doors, how can we expect poorer developing countries to open their borders to huge numbers of refugees?" Furthermore, the reason for which those refugees left their country to reside in other countries for safety have not achieved its selfish goals, as the struggle for power in Liberia and other parts of Africa continues.
European countries are calling for the repatriation of African refugees from Europe; it is base on assumption that those refugees that are to be repatriated are Liberian, where are they going to reside? When in fact the struggle for power in their country continuous to increase every day, even our neighbors doors have been knock by the same forces of destruction who think that the only way of ascending to power is by the means of guns. This is why UN and the International communities should to pay serious attention to the Liberia situation and the cancel of the deadly decease call war in the sub-region and as well as Africa.
Continuous fighting in neighboring Cote d’Ivoire has triggered the influx of more than 69,000 people into Liberia, according to United Nations High Commission for Refugee (UNHCR) Deputy High Commissioner Mary Ann Wyrsch. At the same time, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator to Liberia has called for the protection of those fleeing the war in Cote d’Ivoire.
Of those fleeing from Cote d’Ivoire, it is estimated that more than 39,000 are Liberians, those were people who left the country to seek refuge in neighboring Ivory cost as a result of fighting and instability in the country and more than 25,000 Ivorian refugees while more than 4,000 are from Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana, Guinea and Nigeria. All of these people are said to be seeking refuge in Liberia while rebel continue to rag war on the peaceful citizens. The agency responsible for refugees, UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner Mary Ann Wyrsch said unsafe environment is hampering the work of her agency in Liberia. In respect of these, the UNHCR team in Liberia was working assiduously to deal with the massive arrivals while making efforts at transporting them away from border areas.
"At this stage, when Liberia is under additional strain, with thousands of refugees and returnees streaming into the country from Cote d, Ivoire, The European countries should see reasons for which refugees from Africa are knocking at their doors for rescues. I would like to applaud those countries that are always willing to open their doors to welcome refugees from Liberia and other war countries.
I also welcome the numerous humanitarian assistance render refugees from Liberia and other parts of Africa by the UNHCR, European Union, America and other humanitarian organizations around the world. I would like to appear to the supper power in the world to find a solution in eradicating the deadly decease call war in Africa. If Africa is to become save for Africans, than those stockholders should address the situation face by African Countries, If this is done, African refugees would see reason for returning back to their native land, because their countries depend on than for the future.
